INDUSTRY/MEMBER NEWS
Airbnb to Charge Sales Tax on Phoenix Rentals
Airbnb has altered the lodging industry landscape in recent years, allowing hosts to rent out a home, spare bedroom, apartment, trailer and myriad of other dwellings for a single night or longer. It has emerged as a competitor to hotels and motels in many cities. But like other major players in the rapidly-expanding "sharing economy," its growth has created concerns for local governments that rely on sales- and hotel-tax revenue. Airbnb will now automatically add the tax to guests' bills without affecting payouts to hosts. The City has a 2-percent sales tax on most purchases and an additional 3-percent transient lodging tax on hotel or motel stays under 30 days. Combined, it's a 5-percent tax on most Airbnb reservations. Phoenix is one of several cities that Airbnb has worked with to collect sales taxes, including Portland, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
