Attorney Caroline Larsen More than 250 industry professionals gathered to network with colleagues at the beautiful Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort on August 17. General Manager Ron Simon and his team did an outstanding job and we thank them for hosting the event. During the breakfast, Alison Hoyt, Director of Consulting and Analytics at STR, presented both the national and local lodging trends. While the data shows an overall slowing in the numbers, STR is still projecting growth over the next 12 to 18 months. To download Alison's presentation CLICK HERE.

Attorney Caroline Larsen with Ogletree Deakins also gave a brief presentation and update on the Americans with Disabilites Act (ADA) requirements and the rapidly growing trend of frivilous lawsuits. Arizona has been flooded with 1,500 disability access lawsuits being filed againt local businesses impacting the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. AzLTA has joined with many other state industry associations in an effort to lead the call for a legislative solution to solve this problem at both the state and federal levels. A special thank you to our breakfast sponsor LandCorp and to PSAV for their beautiful stage lighting and design. And we hope you were able to spend time with our exhibitors and new members Vic Anderson with GE Appliances and Tod Miller with Beyond Massage Therapy.

Arizona Leaders Weigh in on ADA Lawsuits Arizona Leaders Weigh in on ADA Lawsuits
VHRA President Kim Sabow and attorneys Joe Clees and Caroline Larsen of Ogletree Deakins were among a group of hospitality industry leaders who met with Senator Jeff Flake's Chief Counsel to discuss the growing issue of frivolous lawsuits being filed against our Arizona businesses regarding ADA compliance. Currently if a public property is not ADA compliant, a lawsuit can be filed without notifying the property and allowing them time to address the issue. The recently formed Advocates for Individuals with Disabilities and its lawyer, Peter Strojnik are responsible for an estimated 1,500 lawsuits that have been filed. The Arizona Attorney General's office is looking to get the lawsuits dismissed. VHRA and AzLTA are pushing to add a report and cure period to the state's existing ADA law next session, as well as working with Sen. Flake and other Arizona congressional leaders for the same fix in Federal ADA law.

Super PAC
Elected officials across all levels of government make decisions that impact the business climate for our industry, which is why we urge you to consider making a personal donation to our Hotel Super PAC. We are focused on helping industry-friendly candidates get elected this November, regardless of party affiliation. Our Super PAC status heightens our political credibility. Your donations allow us to make important and strategic contributions in support of our industry, but we need your continued support to ensure a strong voice. Please consider making a contribution at www.vhra.net to support our industry advocacy efforts.
